National Honor Society inducted six new students into their Skyview chapter on Tuesday, February 25, 2014. Our newest members are Raevyn Crews, Caitlin Encinas, Gabrielle Encinas, Maxwell Gay, Caitlin Powers, and James Pasteur. NHS sponsor and English teacher, Diane Normoyle inducted the new members with Principal, Marianne Goodwin overseeing the ceremony. NHS was instrumental in many activities during the 2013-2014 school year such as collecting clothing for the clothing bank and cans of food for the food bank at Winterhaven. Many members were also the driving force behind the production of the soon to be published yearbook. Skyview is honored to welcome just some of our finest students to this prestigious organization. Congratulations all!
Skyview High School guard, Luis Ruiz has earned Division II All State honors from the Canyon Athletic Association for boys basketball. He is one of fifteen spectacular students chosen from hundreds and will have an opportunity to play in the CAA High School Basketball Futures game at South Mountain Community College on Saturday, March 8, 2014. Averaging 19 points per game, Luis' speed and slashing style led the Huskies to many of their wins and filled the stat book. Luis benefited from great play from the entire team that provided opportunities for fast break points and open lanes to the basket. Coach Mott will travel with Luis and his family so they can celebrate his success and what is sure to be a great showing at the Futures game. If you would like to follow Luis and attend the game in Phoenix, please contact Ms. Isaac at Skyview for more details. Congratulations to the big dog chosen to represent our Huskies!!
AIMS Writing will be conducted on Monday, February 24th and AIMS Reading on Tuesday, February 25th. In the first of many such meetings, Mrs. Goodwin met with seniors to conduct an informational session regarding financial aid and scholarships. Financial aid is available to students from all walks of life, in all financial situations, and could be a student's ticket to a college education. Students were encouraged to share their goals with their parents and to seek assistance in completing college entrance applications. The documents needed for financial aid were also detailed to further expedite what can seem to be an intimidating process. Mrs. Goodwin introduced students to many online assets as well as local workshops focused on helping motivated students to reach their life goals. If you need any information presented by Mrs. Goodwin or regarding college testing, be sure to contact the school so you can get up to speed.
As a reminder: the Open House/Site Council meeting which was to occur on Thursday, February 6, 2014 has been rescheduled to March 6, 2014 at 6:00pm. We mailed letters to each student's home to announce the schedule change. We invite you to come and find out about some exciting changes for the remainder of the year! If you have anything that you would like to add to the agenda, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Goodwin at the school.

The National Honor Society at Skyview High School is already experiencing the joys and wonders of volunteerism. In October NHS worked with STUGO to distribute and pick up donations for a canned food drive, and December 12th the students finalized a gently used clothing donation drive for Casa Maria (Our students delivered 669 articles of clothing!) Thanks to member, Raevyn Crews, and her mother for all the laundering! On December 17th, NHS collected canned food for the Community Food Bank at Winterhaven. Several of the members have been helping the math department with Algebra tutoring and the members have taken on the production of this year's yearbook.
Student Government or STUGO is the voice of the students at Skyview. It is made up of representatives of the student body and takes care of matters such as the prom, school spirit, and community involvement matters. The main focus of STUGO is to represent our school and involve the students in its overall atmosphere. NHS and STUGO have many projects that they collaborate on that are considered “large projects” and many of the members in STUGO are also in NHS. Matters are presented to STUGO, which are then brought to the administration giving the students a chance to express their opinions and give suggestions. We are proud of our graduating STUGO members but that means that there is space for you at the table. See Mr. Townsend about joining and be a part of something BIG!
